The Week in Womble aka As You Wish

Helllooo! A much quieter fortnight a distant relative passed away so have not been in the mood for much knowing a family funeral was going to take place.  Added to that some bad weather; early starts and trains I didn’t half get some reading done!!

What Have I been Watching?

Farscape – Used some spare time to catch up on a re-watch with my friends and I really am enjoying watching how the cast and producers are finding their tone in season 1 - by the end of the first season it’s confident, cocky and weird.  Joyous!

The Princess Bride – Blimey it’s just a delight that script and cast sing!  Really hard to see how this can be re-made.

Amelie – A 90’s film I loved and yes while definitely the manic pixie girl image can be labelled at it I also just love the worldbuilding in the film – its our world at 90 degrees and such a sense of joy when I watch it

What Have I Been Listening To?

More current affairs this week

What have I reviewed or read?

The Bone Garden by Heather Kassner – a fun spooky YA that is inventive and very atmospheric

A Single Light by Tosca Lee – a well-told sequel to a fun thriller I read earlier this year this time going for a post-apocalyptic feel

The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave – beautifully told ‘origin story’ of the Dark sisters we meet in Dracula – tackles racism, violence and a well told queer love story.  A writer to watch.

The Bone Ships by RJ Barker – after the impressive Wounded Kingdom series Barker starts a new and very different series set on the high seas and I LOVED it.  Brilliant characters, plot and worldbuilding.

Wonderland edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane – a very original set of horror, SF and fantasy tales based around Alice’s various adventures.  As someone who does not like Carroll’s work this was amazing in how I loved every story.

The First Time That Lauren Pailing Died by Alysson Rudd – an impressive concept of a parallel universe a teenager crosses over when she dies.  Possibly loved the concept more than final execution but a lot to admire.

Unfinished Business - Tales of the Dark Fantastic by Catherine Lundoff -  a fun set off horror tales with a nice progressive streak perfect for a dark and stormy night

Paper Girls Vol 6 by Brian K Vaughan – slightly disappointed how this wrapped up what had been a really fun series but think possibly the stories had too much to try and solve in one go

Lumberjanes Vol 12 by Shannon Watters – always a fun trip the camp of weird events and fantastic friendship

Alice Payne Arrives by Kate Heartfield – review to come but involves time travellers and highwaywomen

What am I reading or coming soon?

The Djinn Falls in Love edited by Mahvesh Murad and Jared Shurin – need to sit down and lose myself int his

A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie – I must see how things have gone in the First Law universe

Lord of Secrets by Breanna Teintza – interesting looking fantasy

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey – noir, magic and romance? How can I resist

The Swallows by Lisa Luiz – the intro for this is compelling as a thriller

Shatter War by Dana Fredsti and David Fitzgerald – a strange sounding SF series where earth’s histories all collide!

And so much more.  Have fun!
