Spooky Womblings
Helloooo!
Its been a bugger of a month for many reasons but I’ve not really had much reading time until this week. So to catch up on some horror here are some scarier reads this year I think you may want to get your claws, fangs and pseudopods on.
The Twisted Ones by T Kingfisher - so amazingly cheerful thanks to our narrator but it’s hiding some seriously weird and nasty stuff that slowly takes over the story. Great fun and I may have more from Kingfisher very soon
Black Cranes of Unquiet Women edited by Lee Murray and Geneve Flynne - a great selection of tales exploring the roles of Asian women in horror that also tackles issues of racism and colonisation.
Dracula's Child by J S Barnes - Vampires never really die and I really liked this gothic thriller looking at the surviving characters in a London that is getting darker as evil approaches
Famished by Anna Vaught - not wholly horror but this collection has some real bite and all based around food ideas.
Orfeia by Joanne M Harris - for a taste of darkness go into the kingdom of the dead and untrustworthy fae await in this stunning novella
Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson - a strange gothic tale of dark magic and revenge. A author to watch out for
Grave Secrets by Alice James - how about a treat rathe than a trick a droll necromancer and vampires clash in this start to a series you want to get hold of
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones - this will be on many best of lists in 2020 and its a chillingly good horror tale of retribution and hope
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - this is the other book i expect on many best of lists this year. Absolutely stunning and the good news this author is one to get all the books from
Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay - this tale of a world taken over by [plague is uncomfortably close to the mark in 2020 it doesn’t stop it being fantastic
The Watcher in the Woods by Charlotte Bond - in short fiction this set of stories exploring folk stories is wonderfully atmospheric
Green Fingers by Dan Coxon - those who enjoy the dark side of nature would be well advised to look at this short collection too
Unspeakable - A Queer Gothic Anthology edited by Celine Frohn - lets go gothic in this smart collection which also has a good LGBT focus
Honeybones by Georgina Bruce - a novella that is uncomfortable and strange but worth devouring in one sitting
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix - never judge a book by it’s title it sounds light and instead its dark, sombre and smart
Cursed - An Anthology of Dark Fairy Tales edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane - an absolutely stunning collection of great authors give some us some tasty dark fantasy
