The F is for Fear Plan - Day 4 - Great Ceasar's Ghost and More

Thank you for joining us – and well done for surviving the antiques of doom in Day 3. I’ve never seen so many beautiful things destroyed just because they nearly took your soul!  Next up on the FEAR programme Dr R Womble Esq will now explain today’s programme and hand out your syllabus reading material.

Day 4 – Hauntings!

Our love of haunted houses is closely aligned with our belief in the afterlife.  Part of it is comfort that death is not the end but we also often have beliefs that ghosts are signs of unfinished business or retribution.  A warning for us to get our affairs in order or that our bad deeds will always come back literally to haunt us?

A classic take on this is The Turn of The Screw by Henry James - a young governess finds her wards being menaced the spirit of a sinister former member of the staff.  Its finely balanced between madness and someone being scared out of their wits. Another classic and (please see it if gets on stage near you) is The Woman in Black by Susan Hill where a lawyer is sent to an island and solely gets sucked into a nightmare.  The final scenes are devastating.

More recently I enjoyed Ragged Alice by Gareth L Powell which takes a welsh seaside town as a the place for a spirit’s vengeance and this one really hit my sense of claustrophobia The White Road by Sarah Lotz where a climbing expedition continues a family tragedy.

So nothing major today just a little bit of stage acting - face a mirror and say these words three times.  It builds confidence!
